On March 16, 2023, the premiere of three brochures from the "Problematic Packaging Cards" series took place. These are further publications of the Polish Plastic Pact, with the involvement of KGL S.A. specialists in their development.
The Problematic Packaging Cards
In mid-March 2023, the first three "Problematic Packaging Cards" were released by members of the Polish Plastic Pact (PPP) and Łukasiewicz – Łódź Institute of Technology. These documents concern packaging that is unlikely to be effectively managed after use, hinders the processing of other products, or utilizes hazardous chemical substances in their production, such as packaging:
- containing carbon black dye,
- made of PVC and PVDC,
- made of EPS and XPS.
By the end of 2023, Members of the Pact aim to voluntarily eliminate the aforementioned packaging from the market, which will help them achieve the objectives of the Second Golden Rule of Packaging Design.
KGL shares knowledge with the market
Experts from KGL S.A. participated in the development of the brochure on packaging containing carbon black dye. The exclusion of such products is important due to the efficiency of the plastic segregation process. This type of packaging is not detected in the optical sorting process using NIR technology and therefore is not subjected to recycling.

"Packaging in dark colors is most commonly used in trays for meat, fish, fruits, vegetables, as well as in bottles, caps, and cup lids," says Anita Frydrych, Director of the Plastic Materials Technology Development and EU Funds Department at KGL S.A., who represents the company in the Polish Plastic Pact. "From experience, we know that a simple change in design is enough to remove packaging with carbon black dye from the offer and replace them with carbon black-free packaging. Our company initiated such a process in 2020.”
Transparent and light-colored packaging facilitates the identification of packaging waste in the sorting process, contributing to closing the loop on resources and protecting the natural environment.
